Little things...
02.04.09 (11:36 am)   [edit]
Good morning Boys and Girls.

My mind is and has been clouded the last few weeks. Lots going on, most of which is beyond my control and/or influence. Just life. I do my best to ignore it and enjoy my days as I await information I need to have and process in order to make some decisions about my future. It would be easier if the weather was nice, or I was busier at work, but that's not in the cards right now. I do try to make good use of my time working on a new novel, but there are days I can't concentrate well enough to get much done. Other days, I'm able to crank out plenty of half-way decent pages. Go figure.

I'd planned on starting a new business project this winter - which I wrote about here a month or two ago when I'd allowed my enthusiasm to spike - but recently, and for a number of reasons, I decided to put it off. The most important are my fears about the economy, and because just about everyone I've talked to about it told me I was crazy to take the chance right now. I finally decided that might just be the case, so I shelved it - again.

This morning I read a beautifully written ninety-year-old short story, then sent of a couple of comments about it to SweetLady - who has to write a little paper about the story for one of her classes. That was at about seven o'clock. I took SL's morning call and spoke with her a few minutes as she drove to school. Then, after checking Yahoo Weather, I decided that I wasn't going to try to go to work 'til later since all I have scheduled is outdoor work. Trying to do it while the temp is below fifteen degrees is not only uncomfortable, it's also impossible, so I decided to run out to the store to get a couple of things.

...............

Upon returning, I pull into my driveway. I hop out of the car to grab the mail. As my left foot hits the pavement and I put my weight on it, I realize there's a little patch of ice right there; I feel my foot give way. As I start to fall, I try to turn to land on my side instead of on my back. I don't want to snap my head. With my right hand, I reach up and around and manage to grab the Jeep's door handle. My feet slide out completely, but I've caught myself. My left hand extends down and hits the pavement and I'm half-hanging, half-raising myself up. I feel like I'm mid-slide into second base. This has all taken half-a-second, tops.

I get up and feel the burn in my left hand from hitting the frozen asphalt so hard and the strain in my right arm from catching the bulk of my own weight so suddenly. I'm stunned, but extremely grateful I didn't fall hard. I get back into the Jeep and pull up the drive and into the garage.

A few weeks ago I replaced the mouse poison tray I keep in the garage. As I get out of the Jeep, for some reason I go over to see if they've been at it. It's empty.

I come into the house and Roadie's there ready to do her standard treat-beg, I beat her to the punch and give her a few, then collapse into the recliner AuntConi favors when she comes over. It's big, ugly and blue, and I don't usually like it, but for some reason this minor event has freaked me out a little and it's right there.

A few seconds later, I feel the adrenaline rush subside, and I realize... Duh ... I didn't grab the mail.

Be good to everyone.

As I read I conjure an image of you falling and busting your rear end, and I remember doing the very same on the night I arrived in your area for a five-year visit, on a January evening, long ago. Seems I recall that indeed it did hurt just a little....

Do away with the treats, and put Roadie to work earning a living with those mice.

glad you are okay. sheesh!! ice sucks. i have to do a little train from the blazer to the house. I go first, then take one kids hand, walk them....they grab porch rail, i go back for the next kid...etc until we are all safe inside.

course, like you, i am an idiot sometimes...and have my purse, laptop case, a bag of groceries or three, and the spare bookbag or whatever the kids have dropped while I am trying to shepherd them...

recipe for disaster LOL.

glad you are okay, cept the pulled muscles.

The mice are in the garage. I don't let Roadie out there. She's caught two in two years inside the house, and I think I blocked up the little place they were getting in. This place is only eight years old, and built very well, but I found a place in the basement where it looked like they could ease in from under the front porch, and between the top of the basement foundation and the first floor joist. I sealed it up with some of that expanding foam, though they'll probably eat through it eventually if they care to. Mice in the garage is my fault because don't always close the overhead door during the day if I'm home.

What a lot of responsibility you have. I don't know if I could do it.

Oh my goodness ~ I am so glad you didn't break 'anything' ~ at all! It is frightening how quickly things like this happen. Glad that 'the chair' was readily available for your comfort. Please stay safe!

People should not talk on cell phones while driving. Shame on you two! I'm glad you didn't fall...we wouldn't want you to hurt the ice!

Glad you're OK (mostly)!
I have DECIDED to NOT be fearful about the economy. By all means, be prudent and don't risk more $$ on a business than you can afford to lose-- and it's possible that waiting is the best decision for you at this time. As Ben Stein said a few weeks ago on CBS Sunday Morning-- and I'm paraphrasing here-- (The regular people could fix the economy without waiting for the politicians, if we continue to spend prudently and keep the economy moving. If we all stop spending the economy just gets worse and worse. But actually buying a few things keeps more businesses IN business, and contributes to the recovery...)
So even though I have more on my personal and store credit cards than I like, I still have to buy stuff to have stuff to sell. Otherwise, I gotta pimp out the cat or my sister or something...
Keep Blooming!

When I speak on a cell phone while driving, I always use my bluetooth. This morning, I wasn't.

Doing it one at a time simply isn't profitable, but thanks.

Glad that you did not fall as badly as it could have been. I know we have said this to each other several times before, but why do we live in this climate?

Also, I had to travel to NY this week and airplane travel is the only time I seem to be able to concentrate enough to read anything these days. Finally was able to read your novel. Thanks so much for sharing that with me. Will try to email you with some of my reactions if you would like.

Be careful going to get the mail! Take care.

Another sufferer. Yes, please, I always enjoy feedback - hell, I need feedback. Hopefully this next one will be better.

I've about had it with this climate. Pretty sure this will be my last winter dealing with it.

For heaven's sake be careful, we're not 'spring chickens' anymore--a fall like that could break a hip real fast, then where'd ya be? heh.

Ok now everybody pray for S-P-R-I-N-G!!!!!
