I'll do it tomorrow.... Maybe...
05.14.09 (7:42 am)   [edit]
Good morning Boys and Girls.

For six years now, I've used this little emac as my primary desktop. It's been incredibly dependable and I've come to love the thing. Alas, it's started to lag big-time mainly due to the fact that I've almost completely filled the hard drive, something I didn't think would ever be possible when I bought it. After all, 40 gigs is a lot of stuff, even today, and since 90 percent of my time, when on this puter, is spent writing, and the entirety of my output in my entire life couldn't be anywhere near a tenth of a a gig - if that - I couldn't envision ever filling the hard drive. But, the other ten percent of my computer time is spent loading music, pictures and video which DOES take up a bunch of space, and has, by now, forced me to start removing old stuff before I add new.

A year or so ago I bought a new mac and set it up upstairs with the intention of eventually transferring all my crap from this computer to that one, what with it's new operating system and larger hard drive. Unfortunately, I haven't done it yet, partially due to my crazy travel schedule, and partially because of my own propensity to be a bit lazy at night when I'd actually have time to do it. I figured that when the time came, and I was forced to deal with the situation, I would.

Well, the time has come. In fact, the time came a couple of months ago, but I've yet to make the switch. In fact, AuntConi has used the new one far more than I have to play her nightly games of Literati with her sister when she visits, since it happens to be set up in the bedroom she uses when she's here.

So, here's the thing. I also have a powerbook I've taken back and forth to Iowa with me the past year and a half. It happened to get wet at SweetLady's a month or so ago - the second time that's happened, though at least this time it wasn't caused by my own carelessness. Now it's at my repair guru's ALONG with my new "upstairs" mac, which Repair Guru Rick asked me to bring to him along with the powerbbok so he'd have a place to to transfer my files from the laptop if it's unrepairable - which he's afraid it is, or at least he doesn't think it'll be worth it to fix it. And, because of his schedule, I'm unlikely to have use of either of my other macs for at least another couple of weeks, leaving me to deal with this old warhorse and the annoying lags. (Even as I typed this last sentence, the letters showed up on the screen a full five or six seconds after I pushed the keys.... Grrrr.)

I've been annoyed with this situation since I got home Monday night. Worse, I'm very aware it's my own fault the situation exists - which, of course, makes it all the more annoying.

I done per'crastinated - and now I'm paying for it - (as I richly deserve).

Don't you just hate justice?

Be good to everyone.

Yep, I often find myself procrastinating more than I should.

40 gig does not seem like much nowadays. My ipod has more than that on it!

It's comical how these computers have become necessities in our lives. I made it through College and Seminary without ever touching one. Now, I spend at least a couple hours per day working on one, and then I will not add up how much time I waste daily with other things on the computer. Why don't you get your guru friend to install a second hard drive on Old Faithful, and add some ram while he is at it? Sounds like a worthwhile investment.

I've been wanting another laptop. So, my strategy- I've loaned by laptop to my daughter. Hers is broke. She breaks lots of things. Of course, although her promises to the contrary, the loan will be of an extended nature. Very long. Years, likely. So, in a few months, I'll tell my wife I need a laptop and will have to get mine back from the daughter. I'll let that statement "brood" for a day or two. Then, she will come up to me and say, "Oh, let her keep it. Go get you another one!"

So, loan the old computer to one of E's kids. That'll do the trick.

Procrastination will eventually catch up with you.

Most of us tend to procrastinate in such matters. You should invest in an external hard drive to store excess files. It would still allow access to them on your Mac.

Ahhh if they transfer the files, they can do it all in a third of the time it would take you!! so that's a big plus...Also they do get transferred!! another plus so it's a win win situation except for the extra time you have to spend...well spent I should say!!!

I know. I SHOULD buy an external hard drive. I used to use Jazz discs a million years ago. I paid a small fotune for the drive and I THINK each disc held a hundred megs. Isn't that funny? Hell, come to think of it, I could put most of my important stuff on a couple of DVD's.

yah. and you know that part that we always preach and never ever do..the whole backing up your computer thingy? so, my laptop CRASHED with a big CRASH...(actually, I think it was Dave going to too many, shall we say, "i'm really bored at 3 am and lets see what comes up if I google this..........(insert really weird phrase of your choice)).....

I was able to get the computer guru to recover one entire decade of pictures, but alas, not many of my text files survived. I had converted to open office.....and the recovery programs only recognize Word format..HOW RUDE !!

and yes, I did NOT back it up.

so, after salvaging THAT laptop and giving it to dave, I took a dell d600 (sort of the 79 ford f150 of laptops I think) that the computer guru sold me for 200 with a six month warranty for myself.

no one. NO ONE is allowed on it. And I now make judicious use of flash drives. On my key ring. now I just have to worry about not losing my keys....

it never stops, this whole technology thingy LOL

But an external hard drive could hold the capacity of many DVDs and could take a week for you to fill up before you need another!
